Polar bears!

Official polar bear!

I went down to Asbury Park today, to participate in the 49th annual Polar Bear Races. They didn’t get any snow on the shore!

Due to boardwalk construction, runners found out upon arrival that the 5-mile race had been changed to a 5K, which was two miles shorter than we’d been prepared for. Oh well.

The weather wasn’t great (sunny but freezing [30-35 F], with ~30mph gusts of wind, which made it hard to [a] breathe and [b] run against headwinds), and [insert a bazillion other excuses here], so I didn’t do very well (two full minutes slower than my last 5K!). Oh well.

But SOME of these runners are REALLY hardcore, and took a Polar Bear dip in the ocean after the race.

NUTS, I tell you.

Bicyclists

Biking on a Saturday morning!

Something I’ve noticed since I’ve started living here— this whole area has way more hardcore racing bicyclists than I’ve seen anywhere else. Throughout the weekend, they’re a common sight, and you just get used to sharing the road with them.

Hi there!

Unlike the bikes in New York City, which will run you down on the sidewalk and blast through red lights as though they’re green, these racing bikes are pretty good about following traffic laws. They keep to the right on the road, they use hand signals, they stop and yield everywhere they should.

Look, it's a pack of bikers!

When some of the roads around here were repainted last year, they included a nice wide shoulder, which acts beautifully as an unofficial bike lane.

Hello Mister Biker!

These photos were all taken in the Great Swamp, which provides some scenic routes that are really popular with bicyclists, but the routes are unfortunately quite narrow. Navigating the road requires a lot of leapfrogging with all the bikes on your side of the street, all the bikes on the other side, and all the oncoming cars.

It’s not a problem— just requires some patience.

(Which I unfortunately have in short supply.)

Theme day: Numbers!

Follow the numbers!

I haven’t done a City Daily Photo theme day in a while! The website’s down at the moment, but Julie has put together a temporary stand-in for the occasion.

So, uh, yeah. “Numbers” is the theme for this month!

Somehow, when I posted my photos for the Summit Overlook 5K (here and here), I overlooked (aaaahahaha) this one.

Well. It’s out of focus. Of course I didn’t post it. But it makes a pretty good thumbnail, don’t you think?

And look at all those numbers! How appropriate!

Summit Overlook 5K – 2

On your marks... wait, hold up, the pacer car hasn't started yet! Stop!

Hey, check it out, it’s the start of a 5K!

Normally, I’d like for my photos to tell (or support) a narrative of sorts. Yesterday, unfortunately, I started with the almost-end of the event, so today, there’s not really anywhere I can go except helter-skelter all over the place.

So. Um.

See that guy with the kelly green shirt, in the center of the top photo? He was the overall third place winner.

Caught in mid-air

Also: there was a shark.

Shark attack!

Summit Overlook 5K

The winner!

The first ever Overlook Medical Center 5K race was last night (Tuesday, June 26)! This guy was the winner!

Here he comes!

I hope to follow up tomorrow with more race coverage (I guess in reverse chronological order, or no order at all), but this is all I could process and post on Tuesday night before the library (and its wireless internet) close me out.

But yeah! Overlook 5K! Fun times!
