Fireworks display from July 5th. Bradley Beach and Asbury Park ended up doing their fireworks on the same night! My mother and I headed down to the Ocean Grove fishing pier (what’s left of it) to watch the Bradley fireworks at 9:00, and then turned around to watch the Asbury fireworks at 9:30. I never get tired of photographing explosives!
I don’t feel like/ have time to do a lot of editing, so I’m just gonna crop and resize and post a whole bunch of my favorites. (I won’t even STRAIGHTEN them. Yeah I KNOW. The AUDACITY, the ARROGANCE.)
Oh hey, P.S., I have an Instagram account, which is where I’m uploading casual snapshots these days. Follow me there for updates more often than once a year! (Side note: I have wayyyy too much fun with filters.)

I’m not exactly out of retirement, but the summer sky over New Jersey has been doing some interesting things this week, and I’m sharing.
I caught my first lightning strike last night! I’m very excited!
And I caught a second bolt, too! Whoaaaa.
That’s it. I’m done. I can sell my camera now.
(That’s a joke.) (But “photograph lightning” has been on my bucket list for a few years. Now I just need some star trails and I’ll REALLY be all set.)

Yay Riptide! I like that photographer in front, too.
Here’s what the Riptide looks like in a shorter exposure:
I think that’ll do us for this year’s Our Lady of Peace festival. ‘Til next year!

I still get a kick out of non-horse mounts on carousels.

The Dragon Loops are a new one for me. Apparently they’re a variant of the Loop-O-Plane ride.
Here’s what they look like in a shorter exposure:

Ferris wheels are fun.
Hats off to George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr. for designing them. Thanks man.
I got nothin’ beyond that.

I keep stumbling upon delightful little waterfalls on dreadfully overcast days.
Mostly it’s just been dreadfully overcast recently, but man, why’d I bother asking for a ND filter for Christmas if the weather never lets me try it out?
The photo above was just 2 seconds— I wanted to open up the aperture to try to force some depth of field, but I don’t think there was a lot of depth to be forced.
The photo below was a 10-second exposure. Ten whole seconds! I love that my camera can do that!
Also, note to self: there’s no point in having a functional tripod if you NEVER BRING IT WITH YOU. Silly Josy.

Since I don’t yet have a neutral density filter, I still need a lot of clouds overhead (and nearby rocks to lay my camera on) to make a nice silky waterfall photo. Sometimes the clouds are in my favor! I love overcast days!

The rides at the Scotch Plains Italian Festival, which were provided by Majestic Midways, mostly featured small fiberglass sculpted cars— bees, and dune buggies, and puppies, and teacups, and so forth. This one— “Up, Up, and Away”— was the only one of these sculpted-fiberglass rides that ALSO included lights that looked cool at night. (Most of the fiberglass rides don’t offer many lights.) So of course, I took a picture. I coulda done without the fence in the way, but so it goes. NEXT TIME.

I couldn’t do anything about the moiré patterns, but if you click the image, you can see a larger version of the photo that is hopefully a little bit cleaner.
Anyway. This is the Sky Diver!
It’s like a Ferris Wheel on acid. The capsules, which are anchored to the wheel by axles at the front and back, flip over and around as the wheel turns. Whee!
