Feast of OLMC – 7: The Zipper

Zip zip zip zip zip zip zip

Today concludes 2012’s series on the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel!

This is the Zipper ride, which I’ve shown you before. But this Zipper was provided by Ace Amusements, not Blue Sky Amusements. The Blue Sky Zipper— as far as I recall— functions more as a pendulum, where gravity and Newtonian physics do a lot of the work; the Ace Zipper (this one) completely ignores gravity, and is driven by a constant-velocity (constant-speed?) motor, like a Ferris Wheel.

This may seem like an inanely geeky distinction (and— let’s be honest— it is), but as a photographer, the gravity-driven ride requires more precision and anticipation of when to click the shutter, as opposed to the constant-velocity ride, where you can click the shutter any old time (as I was able to do here).

So. This shot? Like shooting fish in a barrel. BAM.

Feast of OLMC – 6: The Jitterbug

Continuing with the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

Swing rides are fun!

…I don’t think I have anything else to add.

Feast of OLMC – 5: The Musicians

Rock it!

At the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was a beer garden.

In the beer garden was a stage.

On the stage were Chelsea Carlson and John Graham [Flash site].

They performed classic rock, and elicited audience participation, because really, what else are little kids supposed to do with themselves in a beer garden, except dance on a stage?

Feast of OLMC – 4: The Hurricane

Rock you like a hurricane!

Continuing with the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

The Hurricane ride! It goes around and around and around pretty smoothly, until they pump the hydraulics and the ride goes nuts. These light trails are after the nutsiness has settled down a bit.

Oh, and by the way, this is what the cars look like during the daytime.

Look Ma! No hands!

Hee hee!

P.S. If you’re looking for photos of a NATURAL hurricane in Berkeley Heights, I got nothin’, but here are some shots of Hurricane Irene in New Providence.

Feast of OLMC – 3: The Ferris Riders

Ridin' the Ferris Wheel

Continuing with the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

Everyone loves a Ferris Wheel! And apparently this kid thought there was something awesome just off to the right.

Feast of OLMC – 2: The Oyster Shucker

Shucking oysters!

Continuing with the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

Let me tell you: a skillful oyster shucker is MESMERIZING. He grabs an oyster, shuck shuck shucks, casually tosses the empty shell into a waiting pot, and repeats, and repeats, and repeats. See that white blur by his hip? That’s an oyster shell in midair.

I snapped a few candid shots of this gentleman before he noticed me. He was an excellent sport, and okay with me continuing, but I caught him off-guard.

Hey photographers— do you have a technique for taking photos of strangers? I usually snap first, smile and ask permission after they catch me. Is there a better way?

Feast of OLMC

Today is the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel!

Berkeley Heights has been celebrating it all week, and I’m gonna take the next week to show you photos from the festival! Pretty exciting. For me, anyway. Photographing carnivals is fun!

We’ll start off nice and slow, with the Rock O’Plane. That’s a funny name for a ride, innit? Looks cool, though.
