Abandoned Triborough Road overpass, NJ 24, Chatham and Florham Park, NJ

As continued from yesterday… in case you’ve forgotten, I’m talkin’ about this mostly-completed cloverleaf interchange/ overpass that doesn’t connect to any roads.

Once you find the little gravel-tracks that were clearly supposed to eventually be paved roads, you can just follow them up and find yourself on top of Route 24.

From the tire tracks, my preliminary guess was that Triborough Rd. is currently being used as some kind of service road, since it’s really close to some PSE&G power lines, and this would be a convenient way to get trucks across Route 24.

But I had a conversation with a nearby resident (Steve!) who was taking his dog for a walk; he assured me this was pretty much publicly accessible land, and apparently the locals are really into driving their ATVs through here. (I saw one too, and Wikipedia mentions it, so it must be true.) I dunno. It could be service vehicles AND all-terrain vehicles.

Why do I refer to the overpass as “Triborough Road” if there isn’t actually any road associated with it? Apparently, as you drive along NJ 24, there is a sign posted on the bridge that labels it as such.

Aaaaaand that’s all I know about the abandoned Triborough Road overpass.

  2. Ahhh, many Chathamites can tell you the history of this spot. There was originally planned to be an exit from the “new” rt 24 that would funnel traffic onto Brooklake Rd and back to Main St. There was too much opposition and it was axed. I grew up at that end of Chatham, but moved away before the new 24 was ever finished. When I explored back there, rt 24 was in the same condition as the cloverleaf still is! It sat for a long time (I think plans for it started in 69?) before they finally got clearance to go ahead with it.

As I understand it, Tri-Borough Road was thought up in the 1950’s, as a connector road from as far north as I80, to the airport, the NY/NJ Port Authority, was planning to build in the Great Swamp. I moved into the area during the Summer of 1965, about the time, that the airport was killed by local opposition. A portion of the road was built in Essex County as Eisenhower Turnpike, but the portion of the road south of South Orange Avenue was never completed, except for the incomplete interchange with Rt 24. At different times, plans were made to continue the road along Brooklake Road, to the older Rt 24(Rt. 124 today), and/or continuing it as far south as Shunpike in Chatham Township or Southern Boulevard, also in Chatham Twp. South of Main Street(Rt 124 today), the road would have to tunnel under, or pass over the electrified Morris & Essex train line to Morristown and Dover, which would have added to construction costs of southern extension.

    This is super cool! Could you clarify how you got up to the overpass? When you say “Once you find the little gravel-tracks that were clearly supposed to eventually be paved roads, you can just follow them up and find yourself on top of Route 24.” Did you get there via Rt 24 or from Jackson Avenue or something?
