Bridge crossing

Mountainside pedestrian bridge! I get such a kick out of these things.

Based on my visit, the town of Mountainside, NJ appears to consist entirely of (1) 25% of the Watchung Reservation and (2) residences. To keep these residents happy and in check, there are (3) municipal offices, which are bisected by (4) U.S. Route 22 [Wikipedia article].

In order to get from the library and fire station (which are on one side of Route 22) to the police station, rescue squad, and other municipal offices (which are on the other side), you need to cross this very busy road.

Apparently, at some point, the good people of Mountainside got fed up with this dangerous road crossing, and built a pedestrian bridge over Route 22 so they could get from one side of their town to the other without killing themselves.

…And this is what it looks like.
