Keeping up with the Jameses

Hello, James.

Here we have the James Building in Madison.

(For some context.)

Remember when I said the original Madison library was built by a couple of benefactors? Those benefactors were the Jameses.

Bikers! Date unknown; c. 1910?

Willis James wanted to “establish a regular library income,” so he built this business/ assembly/ municipal complex across the street from the library. I guess he figured people would come for the civic offices and stay for the books? Or maybe he was trying to supplement his own income by becoming a landlord? Not entirely clear on this.
