The Turtle Back Rock area of the South Mountain Reservation is pretty cool even without the turtle-backed rocks.
This is a panorama shot (since I don’t have a super wide-angle fish-eye) of gigantic boulders. You’ll also have to take my word that they’re gigantic boulders, ‘cos I didn’t really get anything else in the shot to give a sense of scale. But they’re REALLY BIG, BELIEVE ME.

Another lovely festive holiday shot of the Turtle Back Zoo’s Holiday Lights Spectacular! I think it kind of looks like Christmas vomited all over the park, but you can draw your own less disgusting conclusions on the matter.

The Turtle Back Zoo’s Endangered Species Carousel was only built in 2008 (according to a bit of stained glass above a door), but… well, who cares when a carousel was built, as long as people still love it?

The Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange is in the midst of its Holiday Lights Spectacular!
Here are some more photos of the fun:
An animated rattlesnake!
Because I stood in the same place for a couple minutes to try and get good exposures of the displays, I overheard the conversations of everyone passing by. And they were the exact same conversations, over and over and over.
“Look, sweetie, penguins!”
“Look at the penguins!”
“Oh, look at the penguins!”
“Do you see the penguins?”
“Penguins, sweetie, look!”
Anyway. It is free! It is festive! It is appropriate for people under the age of six.
(If you are over the age of six, you may find the Holiday Spectacular to be less than spectacular. These three displays were, frankly, about as spectacular as it got.)
(But like I said: free! festive!)
